JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second-straight game, the Kennesaw State softball team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker as Jacksonville scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a warm and sunny Monday afternoon (March 31) at the JU Softball Complex.

With the setback the Owls fall to 18-17 and 7-5 in Atlantic Sun Conference action, while the Dolphins improve to 14-20 and 5-9 in league standings.

The scoring came early for the Owls with redshirt-freshman Courtney Sutter starting things off in the top of the first with a RBI double to left field scoring senior Sara Sikes, followed by an RBI single through the right side from sophomore Megan Veringa to plate freshman Taylor Denton. Sophomore Kara Chambers then added an RBI on a fielder's choice as Sutter beat the throw home for a 3-0 lead.

JU wasted little time in trimming the KSU advantage to one with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, before evening the contest at 3-3 with a solo shot in the fourth.

With neither team able to push across in the fifth or sixth frames, the game entered the final inning of regulation tied at 3-3. After a two-out walk put a runner on for the Dolphins, Emily Sanchez delivered a walk-off single to deep right center to bring home Victoria Brown for the game-winning run.

Junior pitcher Paige Mathews (3-8) tossed six and two-thirds innings in the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out five.

The Owls registered seven hits on the day, with Veringa putting up a 3-of-3 performance with an RBI while Denton added two hits and a run in the contest.

Brown (7-8) earned the win for the Dolphins and helped her own cause with two runs, two hits and two RBI.

KSU continues Atlantic Sun Conference play with a midweek doubleheader against rival Mercer in Macon, Ga., on Wednesday, April 2 starting at 4 p.m. ET.
