JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Kennesaw State softball team split its doubleheader with Jacksonville as the Owls opened the day with an 8-3 win in game one, before falling 4-3 in eight innings in game two on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon (March 30) at the JU Softball Complex.
Â
The Owls, now 18-16 and 7-4 in the conference, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one as senior
Angie Dascoli earned a bases-loaded walk to plate senior
Sara Sikes in the top of the third. Sophomore
Megan Veringa then brought freshman
Taylor Denton home on a RBI-ground out to second base.
Â
The lead was short-lived as the Dolphins (13-20, 4-9) evened the contest with a two-run home run to centerfield in the bottom of the frame, before taking a 3-2 edge on a solo shot down the left field line.
Â
KSU responded with a five-run rally in the fifth as the Owls opened the inning with five-straight hits, including a three-run double to left center from Veringa. Sophomore
Kara Chambers added a run with some heady base running, coming home on a throwing error by the JU catcher, before senior
Carly Van Auken delivered a RBI-single to right field to score Chambers.
Â
Sikes extended the lead to 8-3 with an RBI-single through the right side as junior pitcher
Paige Mathews (3-7) shut down the Dolphin offense in the final four innings of action. Mathews did not allow a hit and only put one base runner on to earn the win.
Â
Starting senior pitcher
Amanda Henderson went three innings, giving up three runs on four hits and posting one strikeout.
Â
The Owls put up 13 hits against the Dolphins as Denton, Sikes and Chambers each registered three hits, with Denton and Chambers scoring two runs a piece. Veringa also picked up four RBI during the contest.
Â
Victoria Brown (6-8) took the game one loss for JU.
Â
The Dolphins struck first in the day's second game as JU hit its third homer of the day, before a pair of RBI-singles gave the home team a 3-0 lead in the second.
Â
KSU fought its way back into the game just a half inning later with back-to-back doubles from Denton and redshirt-freshman
Courtney Sutter to plate its first run of the game. Dascoli then sent her second home run of the year over the left center field fence to even the score at 3-3.
Â
After neither team was able to push across a run in regulation, the game moved to extras where Victoria Brown sent the home team to the 4-3 victory on a walk-off home run to right center in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Â
The Owls totaled seven hits as Sutter paced the Owls with three hits, while Dascoli picked up two hits and two RBI in the setback.
Â
Mathews started the contest and went one and two-thirds innings before re-entering in the fifth to take the loss. She gave up four runs on five hits in four innings of work. Henderson did not allow a hit and struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief work.
Â
Taylor Rossman (2-7) earned the win for the Dolphins.
Â
The Owls will go for the series win tomorrow, Sunday, March 31 as KSU and JU faceoff in the series finale at 3 p.m. ET at the JU Softball Complex.
