JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was a heartbreaking loss for the Kennesaw State baseball team on Sunday afternoon as the Owls dropped the rubber match of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with Jacksonville, 4-3.

The Owls had a runner in scoring position down one run in the top of the ninth but failed to bring it in after rallying to tie things up in the eight, sending the Owls away with a 13-18 overall record and a 2-7 mark in the A-Sun.

The Owls fell behind for the first time in the close affair 3-2 in the fourth after Jacksonville, now 8-17 with a 3-6 record in the conference, put across the then go-ahead run for the 3-2 lead.

The teams then played scoreless ball up until the top of the eighth when KSU knotted things up at three after Max Pentecost singled then stole second, putting himself in scoring position after taking his ninth base of the year.

Bo Way then sent a single through the right side to score Pentecost, evening up the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth it was Jacksonville that came up with the clutch hitting, Scott Schaub sending an RBI single to left field to give the Dolphins a one-run lead before sitting down the Owls in the top of the ninth for the win.

KSU was again first on the scoreboard, putting up a one-run lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Pentecost that scored Justin Motley from third. Motley picked up the stand-up triple with one out before being driven home for the 1-0 advantage.

JU scored its first run in the bottom of the second, tying things up at one with a Braddock Rowe base hit. The Owls then regained the lead in the top of the third as Pentecost sent his team-leading third homer of the season over the left field wall for a 2-1 KSU lead.

But the Dolphins responded, scoring the tying run in the third before taking the 3-2 edge in the fourth as JU went on to take the series, two games to one.

It was again Pentecost who had the big day at the plate, going 3-for-4, the only Owl with multiple hits, with two RBI and a pair of runs scored along with his home run and stolen base.

Pentecost has now hit safely in 12 consecutive games, the longest active hit streak in the A-Sun.
