AUBURN, Ala. – The Kennesaw State baseball team rallied from a 6-0 hole in Plainsman Park on Tuesday night, but the Owls fell just short of pulling off the upset as Auburn took the 10-5 win on its home field.
Â
Catcher
Max Pentecost made it another school-record breaking night for Kennesaw State, catching three runners stealing to grab sole possession of the record in the NCAA Division I record books for the Owls.
Â
KSU, now 12-16 on the year, knocked 13 total hits during the outing, the team's 15
th game with double-digit hits.
Â
The Owls put runners on in each of the first six innings with six separate Owls collecting hits in the first three frames including
Max Pentecost extending a nine-game hit streak and
Kal Simmons making it 25 games out of KSU's 28 reaching base safely.
Â
But it was Auburn, now 18-8, that put across the game's first run, Ryan Tella making it home from second base on a Daniel Robert blooper single in the bottom of the second. The Tigers went on to take a 4-0 lead after two with a two RBI double from Sam Gillikin and a single from the leadoff hitter Jordan Ebert that scored one more.
Â
The Tigers tossed on two more runs in the third with a leadoff homer from Tella followed by a RBI single to make it a 6-0 game after three.
Â
KSU found its way on the scoreboard in what was a massive top of the sixth as designated hitter
Brennan Morgan started things off by driving in his 15
th run of the season in
Alex Liquori after the right fielder started things off with a double to left-center field. The second run came with the third of four Auburn wild pitches of the inning as
Colin Bennett scampered home after advancing twice after his single on errant AU pitches to cut the lead to 6-2.
Â
Jacob Bruce then kept the rally alive with a two RBI double that scored Simmons and Morgan with Pentecost making it a one-run affair at 6-5 with a base hit to go with an error on the AU shortstop that sent home Bruce.
Â
But Auburn would bump its lead back up to 8-5 in the home half, scoring with a single through the right side of the infield and a safety squeeze bunt to add on the insurance runs for the Tigers. AU tagged on a pair more in the eighth before retiring the Owls in the ninth to take the 10-5 win.
Â
Simmons, Bruce, Pentecost, Liquori and
Matt Bahnick each came up with two hits, Liquori and Bahnick both earning their third doubles of the season.
Â
The road trip now continues for Kennesaw State as the Owls return to Atlantic Sun Conference play with a three-game series at Jacksonville, starting off this Friday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
