KENNESAW, Ga. –
Kal Simmons belted four hits including his first homer of the season, but five runs weren't enough on Saturday afternoon as the Kennesaw State baseball team dropped an Atlantic Sun Conference matchup with Lipscomb, 7-5.
Â
Simmons was good for three singles to go with the four-bagger while bringing in two runs and scoring one himself as the Owls now sit at 12-14 on the year and 1-4 in the conference after putting up 12 total hits on the Bison pitching staff.
Â
Lipscomb put up a big third inning to grab the first lead of the contest for either team, bringing home four runs on five hits and an error. The Bison belted three doubles during the frame to take the 4-0 edge.
Â
KSU cut the Lipscomb lead to just two runs in the bottom of the fourth as a
Brennan Morgan single to right field scored
Alex Liquori and
Bo Way for the 4-2 score.
Â
Kal Simmons then led off the fifth with his first homerun of the season, sending a shot over the right field wall to bring the Owls within a run at 4-3. KSU threatened with runners in the corners after back-to-back base hits from
Max Pentecost and Way, but couldn't bring home the tying run.
Â
The Bison responded with a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth, Mike Korte coming up with the two RBI single to the right side to give Lipscomb the 6-3 lead.
Â
KSU then made it a one-run ballgame, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly from the pinch hitter
Justin Motley and a RBI single from Simmons, setting the score at 6-5 Bison.
Â
LU added one more in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, putting the visitors back up by a pair as the Bison went on to win things, 7-5.
Â
Along with Simmons, both Morgan and Way each put up a pair of hits during the outing, Morgan picking up a pair of RBI.
Â
Travis Bergen got the start on the hill, going five innings allowing just six hits while striking out six, putting his season total at 37. The relief battery of
James Connell,
Will Solomon,
Andrew Austin and
Justin McCalvin went the final four innings allowing just two hits and one run.
Â
The two teams will wrap-up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET in Stillwell Stadium.
