SB: Owls Return to Bailey Park for A-Sun Series with Lipscomb

KSU and Bisons Set to Play Doubleheader on Saturday, Single Game on Sunday

THE GAME:
After 10 days away from Bailey Park, the Kennesaw State softball team returns home for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with Lipscomb on Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23. The Owls and the Bison will play a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday with a 1 p.m. ET start time for both days.

THE PROMOTIONS:
Following Sunday's series finale with the Bisons, there will be an autograph session with the Owls as well as the opportunity for kids to run the bases at Bailey Park.
 
THE OPPONENT:
The Bisons enter this weekend's contest with one of the top offenses in the A-Sun. Lipscomb tops the league in on-base percentage (.402), runs scored (183), RBIs (155) and doubles (40), while also ranking second in batting average (.321) and hits (238), and third in home runs (25).

LAST TIME OUT:
Despite leading early, the Kennesaw State softball team fell to Georgia State, 7-5, in nonconference action on a chilly Tuesday night (March 18) at Robert E. Heck Softball Complex. Junior Paige Mathews (2-5) took the loss for the Owls, giving up four runs and six hits as she started and went four innings before re-entering the game in the fifth inning. Offensively, sophomore Megan Veringa blasted her team-leading fifth home run as she led the Owls with two hits and two RBI in the loss.
 
NEXT UP:
The Owls continue its home stand with the rubber match against Georgia State on Tuesday, March 25, before hosting Georgia Tech for Lexi's Day 2014 on Wednesday, March 26. First pitch for both games is set for 6 p.m. ET at Bailey Park.
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
Top Five in Strikeouts
The Owls have two pitchers in the top five of the league in strikeouts, with senior Amanda Henderson ranking second with 103 strikeouts, while junior Paige Mathews owns 56 strikeouts, good for a tie for fifth in the A-Sun.
 
Home Run Leader
Sophomore Megan Veringa had back-to-back games with a home run and leads the team with five long balls on the season, while also owning a five-game hitting streak with two hits in her last five games.
 
Dascoli at the Plate
Senior Angie Dascoli leads the Owls and ranks eighth in the A-Sun with a .382 batting average and ranks second on the team with 29 hits.
 
Henderson in the Circle
Henderson ranks in the top seven in the conference in several categories, including leading the league with 12 wins on the season, second in strikeouts (103), appearances (18), innings pitched (81.1) and games finished (seven), fourth in opposing batting average (.180) and seventh in ERA (1.89). 
 
Double Sutter
Sophomore Courtney Sutter sits in a tie for second in the league with eight doubles, while ranking 10th with a .622 slugging percentage. Her 19 RBIs also lead the Owls in that category.
 
Defense
The Owls own the third-best fielding percentage in the Atlantic Sun Conference at .962 and have only committed 29 errors on the season, the third-lowest total in the league.
 
Hot Hitting
The Owls have registered eight or more hits in their last seven games, including a season-high 19 hits in a 17-7 win over Northern Kentucky on March 15. 
 
Tough Competition
The Owls have seven teams on their schedule that have been included in the Top 25 polls or have received votes in the polls so far this season, including Alabama, Tulsa, Stanford, Mississippi State, Lipscomb, USC Upstate and UAB.
