KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State catcher
Max Pentecost tied the NCAA Division I school record for runs batted in in a single game, but the effort fell short as the Owls took an Atlantic Sun Conference series opening loss to Lipscomb on Friday night.
Â
Pentecost sent home six runs during a 3-for-4 night at the plate, driving in every run scored for KSU during the ballgame, while belting his second homerun of the season and his 10
th and 11
th doubles.
Â
KSU sees its record move to 13-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference while LU moves to 14-9 on the year and 3-1 in the league standings.
Â
After tossing out a Bison runner attempting to steal in the top of the first to end the inning, Pentecost came through on the offensive end for the Owls, sending a hard-hit double to left-center field for the 1-0 lead, scoring
Jacob Bruce.
Â
Lipscomb found its way on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as RBI leader Drew Adams sent a shot over the left field wall, scoring a pair of runs and giving the Bison a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Bison then plated five runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of hits and a costly KSU error, putting the visitors up 7-1.
Â
It was then Pentecost who came through once again, this time in the bottom of the fifth, sending his second homer of the year to left field, scoring both Bruce and
Kal Simmons to cut the Lipscomb lead down to 7-4.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh Pentecost took it to the Bison once more, this time with a double to right field, bringing in Bruce and
Matt Bahnick to bring the Owls within one run at 7-6.
Â
The Owls threatened in the final two innings, putting runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, before a left field to second base double play ended the game in favor of the Bison.
Â
Simmons also finished the night with multiple hits, knocking two with a run scored.
Â
After replacing starting pitcher
Nathan Harsh in the fifth, relief pitchers
Gabe Friese and
Justin McCalvin tossed the final five innings allowing just one run on three hits.
The Owls and the Bison will grapple again tomorrow in game two of the three-game series starting at 2 p.m. ET in Stillwell Stadium.
Travis Bergen is slated to be the starter on the mound for KSU.
