BLUFTON, S.C. – Despite turning in mixed results during the opening day of the Colleton River Collegiate on Sunday, the Kennesaw State men's golf team played well enough to finish 36-holes at the par-72, 7,365-yard Colleton River Plantation Club's Dye Course in first place.
After turning in a 4-under par 284 in the first round to build an 11-shot lead, the Owls followed that effort with a 7-over par 295 for a 3-over par 579, one shot better than Winthrop (580). Host Michigan State (586) is third and followed by Seattle (590) and Connecticut (592).
"The results are a little skewed and deceiving from today because in my opinion we didn't play anywhere near our potential," head coach
Jay Moseley said. "We had some solid play in the morning round and I'm really proud of Carlos (Segura Oliva) for getting his first under par round in competition but we are a much better team than we showed today."
After opening with a 2-over par 74, Segura Oliva posted a 2-under par 70 to finish at even-par 144 and is tied for third, one shot behind freshman teammate
Teremoana Beaucousin, who is tied for first after carding rounds of 70-73 for a 1-under par 143. The 36-hole total is a career best for Beaucousin who is tied for the lead with Winthrop's Zach Seabolt.
Beaucousin and Segura Oliva are two of five Kennesaw State players among the top seven in the individual standings. Juniors
Jimmy Beck and
Kelby Burton, along with freshman
Chris Guglielmo are tied for seventh with 2-over par scores of 146. Burton is playing in the tournament as an individual.
Junior
Austin Vick is tied for 38th after shooting 77-77 for a 10-over par 154 total.
