ATLANTA, Ga. – Despite leading early the Kennesaw State softball team fell to Georgia State, 7-5, in nonconference action on a chilly Tuesday night (March 18) at Robert E. Heck Softball Complex.

With the loss, the Owls snap a four-game win streak and fall to 15-12 on the season, while GSU improves to 13-12 in 2014.

KSU scored a run in each of the first four innings as sophomore Kara Chambers opened the scoring when she came home after senior Angie Dascoli struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball.

Sophomore Megan Veringa continued her strong play at the plate with her team leading fifth home run of the season on a bomb to right center in the second inning, before delivering a RBI-single up the middle to plate Dascoli for the 3-0 lead in the third. Freshman Taylor Denton then added an RBI-single up the middle to bring sophomore Missy Perkowski for the 4-0 advantage in the top of the fourth.

The Panthers then scored seven-straight runs over the next two innings, including plating six in the fifth inning on a two-run homer, followed by a grand slam for the 7-4 GSU lead.

KSU closed to within 7-5 with a run on a Denton RBI-single up the middle, before putting two base runners on with one out in the top of the seventh, but the comeback fell short as the Panthers went on for the 7-5 win.

Junior Paige Mathews (2-5) took the loss for the Owls, giving up four runs and six hits as she started and went four innings before re-entering the game in the fifth inning. Sophomore Morgan Sikes and freshman Logan Viers both saw action in the fifth inning, with Sikes giving up two runs and two hits and Viers giving up one run. Senior Amanda Henderson entered in the sixth inning and did not allow a hit.

The Owls next return to Bailey Park for a three-game conference series with Lipscomb on Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23. KSU and the Bisons will play a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday with both days starting at 1 p.m. ET.
