Kal Simmons collected five hits while teammate
Brennan Morgan earned four RBIs as the Kennesaw State baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Mercer on
Saturday.
The Owls (12-11, 1-2 Atlantic
Sun Conference) suffered an 8-5 setback in the opener before falling 11-8 in the nightcap as the Bears bounced back from a 2-1, loss to Kennesaw State on
Friday.
KSU grabbed and early lead in game one when Morgan grounded into a double play before scoring
Bo Way from third.
Mercer (15-6, 2-1 A-
Sun) would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on Matt Meeder single that scored two runs, one of which came off of an Owl error.
The Bears would add five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Nick Backlund grand slam and a RBI single by Michael Massi.
The Owls then added three runs in the top of the sixth inning off of Morgan's three-run home run, his third of the season.
Nathan Harsh (2-2) took the loss in game one for the Owls going 3.2 innings giving up eight hits and five runs.
Grant Papellian (2-1) tossed 5.1 innings giving up four runs on nine hits.
The Owls picked up 10 hits in game one with four players recording two hits each.
In the second game of the twinbill, Mercer centerfielder Sasha LaGarde hit a walk-off three-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth off
James Connell (2-2) to win the game.
Chris Mcgowan got the Owls on the board first in the top of the second with an RBI double before Charlie Madden's solo homerun knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
The Bears would add four more runs in the third inning on a pair of RBI singles and a two rbi single by Madden.
The Owls then added two runs in the fourth inning on a RBI single by
Matt Bahnick and a Morgan RBI groundout.
Mercer would score a run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homerun by Derrick Workman.
The Owls went on to score two runs in the top of the sixth on a pair of RBI singles by McGowan and Simmons.
Mercer took an 8-5 lead on another Madden RBI single in the bottom of the sixth with Kennesaw State adding a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Morgan provided an RBI single for KSU and Bahnick scored on a wild pitch to keep the Owls on the board.
KSU would tie the game in the 8th inning when Simmons scored on an overthrow by the catcher who was trying to catch Simmons stealing third.
Offensively, the Owls collected 16 hits in the ballgame,
Alex Liquori belting four of those to pace the Owls while eight of the nine starters recorded at least a hit.
Kennesaw State will host Georgia Tech at Stillwell Stadium on
Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
