Macon, Ga. – Solid Pitching from
Travis Bergen and
Justin McCalvin led Kennesaw State past Mercer 2-1 in the Atlantic
Sun Conference opener for both teams on
Friday night at Claude Smith Field.
Bergen pitched six strong innings giving up four hits and one run while striking out six Bears.
McCalvin came in and gave the Owls (12-9, 1-0 A-
Sun) three strong innings surrendering just two hits and striking out a pair to pick up his second save of the year.
Ryan Askew took the loss for Mercer despite giving up just five hits and two runs.
The Owls would jump on the board first in the bottom of the third as freshmen
Cornell Nixon singled to left and made it to third on a Mercer error.
Kal Simmons would bring home Nixon on a RBI groundout which gave the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Mercer (14-5, 0-1 A-
Sun) scored their only run of the game in the 4th inning. Nate Moorhouse led off the inning with a double and would later score when Chesny Young grounded into a double play.
The Owls took the lead for good in the top of the 4
th inning when Nixon's RBI single brought home
Alex Liquori.
The Owls picked up five hits in the game. Nixon led the Owls with two while Liquori,
Max Pentecost and
Bo Way had a hit each.
Kennesaw State and Mercer will play a doubleheader
tomorrow beginning at 2.p.m. at Claude Smith Stadium.
