KENNESAW, Ga. – After a standout rookie season for the Kennesaw State women's basketball team, freshman guard
Deandrea Sawyers earned Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshmen Team honors, the league announced on Tuesday.
"I am extremely excited for Deandrea," said head coach
Nitra Perry. "She consistently works hard in practice and she was much deserving of the award. She is a very humble kid, so I am just extremely excited that she got rewarded for her efforts."
Sawyers was one of only two freshmen in the league to rank in the top-12 in scoring in both overall and conference play as she averaged a ninth-best 13.3 points per game in A-Sun action, while she ranked 12th in overall play with 12.7 points per contest.
She has been dynamite behind the arc with 60 made three-pointers this season, which sits second-best in the league. Her 60 three-pointers also rank third-most in program history for three-point field goals made in a season.
The one-time Freshman of the Week honoree has registered seven 20-point games, including posting a career-high 24 points on three occasions, while also totaling seven threes in a game twice this season.
The Nashville, Tenn., native was the only freshman in the top 10 in minutes played and is averaging 33.8 minutes per contest, which sits sixth in the A-Sun.
Sawyer and the Owls open Atlantic Sun Conference Championship action tonight, March 11, as they face Stetson in the first round of the tournament at 7 p.m. in the Edmunds Center in Deland, Fla.
