TROY, Ala. – The Kennesaw State softball team wrapped play at the Troy Subway Invitational as the Owls earned a 4-3 eight-inning win over Memphis, before falling 5-0 to host Troy in their tournament finale on Saturday, Feb.8 at the Troy Softball Complex.

The Owls finished the weekend with a 2-2 overall record.

It was a scoreless game for the first three and a half innings against Memphis, but the Tigers pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of fourth on a single to shortstop.

An inning later, KSU tied up the contest as sophomore
Kara Chambers reached on a field's choice to plate junior
Natalie Rhodes.
Â
UM again took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a single to the pitcher, but a two-run home run from sophomore
Megan Veringa in the top of the seventh gave the Owls their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Â
Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers rallied with a single to left field to extend the game to extra innings.

With the game in the eighth inning, redshirt-senior
Sara Sikes was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior
Angie Dascoli. Two batters later sophomore
Alexis Collis singled to shortstop to score Sikes and the game-winning run.

Holding onto the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Owls used solid defense a two strikeouts from senior pitcher
Amanda Henderson to earn the second win of the season.
Â
The Owls recorded 11 hits and two errors in the win, while the Tigers notched 10 hits and one error. Collis and sophomore
Missy Perkowski tallied three hits each for KSU.

Henderson picked up her first win of the seasons in two innings of work, giving up only two hits and one run while striking out five. Junior
Paige Mathews started the game and went four innings, giving up four hits while posting six strikeouts.

Calli Irvin took the loss for the Tigers.
Â
Henderson continued her strong pitching in the Owls' second game of the day, as the Covington, Ga., native held the Trojans off the scoreboard for the first four innings, while striking out eight batters in the process.

With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the sixth, the Trojans loaded the bases before Heather Johnston knocked a home run to take a 4-0 lead. Troy added a fifth run on a one-run homer from Meg Willis a batter later and went on for the 5-0 win.

KSU had two hits and an error in the game, with Rhodes and Perkowski each notching a one in the loss, while Troy tallied eight hits and an error.
Â
Mathews (0-1) took the loss for the Owls in 1.1 innings of work. Jaycee Affeldt earned the win for the Trojans.
Â
The Owls next return home to host the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock, Ga., on Feb. 14-16.
