ATLANTA, Ga. – For the first time since 1989 the Kennesaw State baseball team made its way down I-75 and came back home with a win over Georgia Tech, taking down the Yellow Jackets on the road 5-3 in 12 innings of action at Russ Chandler Field.

KSU, now 6-4 on the year, had GT down to its final out on three separate occasions, finally earning the game-clinching punch out with a game-winning double play that went from the shortstop Kal Simmons to Dylan Ivey at second and finally to Chris McGowan at first, ending the extra inning affair.

Freshman Mason Ward earned his first collegiate win on the mound after going 1.1 innings allowing no hits and striking out one while earning support from Simmons and Bo Way as the two each came up with three hits.

KSU earned the first two runs of the ballgame, one in the first off of a Way RBI double and the second in the fourth on a Brennan Morgan ground out RBI to go up 2-0.

Georgia Tech, now 4-4, put up its first run in the bottom of the sixth and tied things up in the bottom of the ninth after battling down to their final out before coming up with the game-tying run on a Kennan Innis bunt single.

With both teams going scoreless through the 10th it was the Owls who put across the go-ahead run in the 11th as a wild pitch followed by a throwing error on the Georgia Tech catcher scored Simmons from second base after he reached on the walk.

Again down to their final out, the Yellow Jackets brought home the tying run as Ryan Peurifoy knotted the game up at three with a double to right field.

But it was Ivey who came up as the hero in the 12th inning, bringing home Alex Liquori and pinch runner Justin Motley as his hit to deep right-center field was dropped to give the Owls the 5-3 lead.

Ward walked the first runner he faced before working out of the jam with the clinching double play from the KSU infield.

The Owls picked up 10 hits during the outing, six from Way and Simmons.

Starter Gabe Friese got the no decision despite going five innings allowing just three hits and striking out one.

The Owls will continue their four-game road trip this weekend as the team heads to Jacksonville, Ala. for a three-game series against Jacksonville State starting on Friday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. ET.
