KENNESAW, Ga. – With homeruns from Max Pentecost and Chris McGowan and 10 strikeouts from the pitching staff, the Kennesaw State baseball team eased to a 10-6 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon in Stillwell Stadium.

KSU put up 10 or more runs for the fourth time this season as the Owls improve their record to back over .500 at 5-4 while dropping the Runnin' Bulldogs to 3-5.

After GWU put up the game's first run in the top of the first, the Owls answered with two runs of their own during the home half of the inning as Pentecost blasted his first homer of the season over the left field wall, scoring Jacob Bruce to give KSU the 2-1 lead.

The game then went scoreless until the fourth when Pentecost drove in Kal Simmons with a sacrifice fly. The Owls then added on one more in the fifth, this time on a long ball from McGowan that cleared the right field fence to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

KSU would break the game open in the eight, dropping six runs on Gardner-Webb, capitalizing on four hits and a Bulldog error to go up 10-1. The first four batters that came to the plate each scored runs with Alex Liquori belting a two-RBI single to make it a nine-run game.

Gardner-Webb would tack on four runs in the top of the last, keeping things interesting by putting the tying run on deck, but the Owls prevailed, retiring the final batter on a ground out to come away with the victory, making it a 2-2 weekend for KSU.

Chris Erwin earned his first collegiate win on the mound, lasting five innings giving up just six hits and one run while striking out eight. Justin McCalvin and James Connell came on in relief, combining for three innings while striking out four and not allowing a hit.

After Pentecost tied up the season home run race, McGowan quickly regained the lead after knocking over his second of the season. Bruce was tops for both teams with his three hits while Pentecost and McGowan each drove in three runs and scored two.

The Owls will take the show on the road this week, playing at Georgia Tech this Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. ET.
