FINAL RESULTS

Winston-Salem, N.C. –
The women's track and field team finished in second place behind Jacksonville at the 2014 Indoor Track and Field Championship.

"My hat is off to Ron Grigg and his ladies at Jacksonville," Director of Track and Field Andy Eggerth said. "Their ninth win in a row is one of the longest of any sport in history. He does a phenomenal job year after year!"

I'm proud of our ladies as there were countless outstanding performances, conference, school, and personal records," Eggerth added. "After being third in the conference last year and sitting in fifth place early on day 2 of competition, I was worried as we were not performing up to our capacity. Our ladies stepped it up a notch though to pull out a strong runner up finish."

The highlight of the afternoon was when Alicia Whittle (7.50), Hannah Wood (7.58), and Martina Cernochová (7.62) swept the 60m-dash.

Wood also won the 200m while setting the school record with a time of 24.29.

Sydney Williams improved her own school record and finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:14.98.

Latia Daniels broke the 400m flat track school-record with a time of 57.54 to finish in third place.

Despite having some strong performances on the women's side, Eggerth still feels that there is plenty of room for improvement.

"At the end of the day, we're not a collection of individuals with some great performances, we're a team," Eggerth said. "The team result is that we lost and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. If we are happy with second place, then we will never be champions. Those that refuse to lose and are willing to do what it takes to not lose again are going to be the ones that become victorious. Championships are rarely won at the championship though, they're won in the off-season, in the pre-season, every morning in the weight room and every day in practice! We must have a single-minded focus day in and day out, that everything we do we are going to do with the focus, discipline, effort, and intensity to be the best!"

Winning the first championship and knocking off Jacksonville will be very tough, but Coach Eggerth will not rest until it happens.

"I will work as long and as hard as I can to see victory for our women," Eggerth exclaimed.
