KENNESAW, Ga. – Senior center fielder
Bo Way collected four hits and junior All-American
Max Pentecost extended his hitting streak to eight games as Kennesaw State lost both games of a doubleheader to visiting Gardner-Webb at Stillwell Stadium on Saturday (Feb. 22).
Â
The Owls (4-4) suffered an 8-4 setback in the opener before falling 3-0 in the nightcap as the Runnin' Bulldogs bounced back from a 2-1, 11-inning loss to Kennesaw State on Friday.
Â
KSU and Gardner-Webb (3-4) were locked in a scoreless ballgame until the fourth inning when Bulldogs catcher Brantley Smith connected for a two-run home run off Owls starter
Travis Bergen (1-1).
Â
Gardner-Webb added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build 5-0 lead before Kennesaw State was able to break through against Hunter Smith (1-0). After Way doubled to open the inning, right fielder
Alex Liquori executed a hit-and-run to perfection as he grounded a single through the left side to score Way and put his team on the scoreboard.
Â
The Owls added a single run in the eighth and plated two more in the ninth on Brennan Morgan's two-run home run – his first of the season.
Â
In the seven-inning nightcap, Gardner-Webb starter Andrew Barnett (2-0) scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Junior
Nathan Harsh (1-1) came up on the short end of the pitchers' duel as he worked five innings, surrendered three hits, three runs (two earned), walked three and struck out five.
Â
Gardner-Webb took advantage of a pair of walks by Harsh to start the second inning. It looked like the Owls' junior might escape the jam as he retired the next two batters before JJ Nazzaro placed a two-run single through the left side to plate a pair of runs and give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Â
That proved to be plenty of run support for Barnett, who held the Owls to just seven singles, including a bunt safety in his final at-bat by Pentecost that allowed the Owls' junior to keep his streak of hitting safely in every game this season intact.
Â
Way concluded the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored. Morgan, who received the start behind the plate in Game 1, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Â
Kennesaw State will look to gain a split of the four-game series when hosts Gardner-Webb at Stillwell Stadium on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. (ET). Â
