KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State baseball team put up five runs on nine hits, but the Owls couldn't put a stop to the Savannah State offense as the Tigers took a 7-5 win in Stillwell Stadium on Wednesday night.
Â
The Owls had won three in a row up until the loss, putting KSU at 3-2 on the early season while Savannah State moves to 1-3 after mustering up 13 hits.
Â
Jacob Bruce knocked a pair of hits for Kennesaw State, the only Owl with multiple hits, picking up one of the three doubles hit by the home team on the night.
Â
KSU put up the first run of the contest early on, scoring in the first on a
Max Pentecost double to leftfield that scored Bruce from first base. But Savannah State came up with six runs in the top half of the second with a two RBI double from Todd Hagen leading the charge to give the Tigers the lead.
Â
After both teams went scoreless through the next two innings, KSUÂ put up a two-spot in the fifth, Bruce driving in one with a double and
Chris McGowan sending in the other on a fielder's choice. The Owls added two more in the next frame, capitalizing on three SSU errors to bring home
Brennan Morgan and
Alex Liquori to make it a one-run ballgame at 6-5 Tigers.
Â
Savannah State would tag on one more in the top of the seventh and that's all it would take as the Tigers picked up the win.
Â
After
Gabe Friese earned his first collegiate start,
Mason Ward came in in relief, throwing four innings allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Â
All but one KSU player in the starting lineup came up with a hit as KSU has now put up 48 runs in the first five games of the year.
Â
Fans will have four opportunities to see the Owls this weekend as KSU hosts Gardner-Webb in a four-game series starting this Friday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. ET.
