FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The Kennesaw State women's golf team turned in its best showing of the 2013-14 season at the 14-team Amelia Island Collegiate that concluded Tuesday (Feb. 18) at the par-72, 6,029-yard Amelia National Golf & Country Club in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
The Owls recorded a final-round 11-over par 299 to finish the 54-hole event at 7-over 871 and place second. Florida International claimed the team title with a 5-under par total of 859.
Kennesaw State established season-bests for low 54-hole (871), low 36-hole (572) and low 18-hole (282) scores during the tournament. The second place finish also is a season-best.
" I am proud of the team for our second place finish, although we know we're capable of more," head coach
Rhyll Brinsmead said." This was a great confidence booster as we start our marathon spring season."
The Owls were led by freshman
Dulcie Sverdloff who finished third with a 4-under par 212 after carding rounds of 73-69-70. Tiffany Chan of Daytona State College and Florida International's Camila Serrano tied for first place with 8-under par scores of 208. Serrano was awarded individual medalist after winning a four-hole playoff.
Freshman
Laura Estefenn also posted a top 10 finish as she tied for 10th with a 3-over par 219 total following rounds of 76-70-73.
"I am very satisfied with the play from our freshmen. Both Dulcie and Laura had top 10 finishes and led the way," Brinsmead said. "It is also great to have Hayley (Clinning) back in the lineup, her even-par round yesterday was essential to our finish. We have 10 days to regroup and get prepped for Miami. This team is so talented and a lot of fun to coach. I am excited to see just how low we can go."
Juniors
Kaew Preamchuen and
Ines Lescudier finished 13th and tied for 14th, respectively. Preamchuen posted a 5-over par total of 221 while Lescudier recorded a 7-over par score of 223.
