KENNESAW, Ga. – After taking two from Tennessee Tech on Saturday, the Kennesaw State softball team dropped the series finale to the Golden Eagles, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 16) at Bailey Park.
                                                                       Â
After a single to start the game, TTU (1-7) capitalized on mistakes made by the Owl defense to score the contest's first run for an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Â
The scoring continued for the Golden Eagles in the third inning, posting nine-straight hits, including a three-run homerun, a triple and a double, to plate eight runs and take a 9-0 lead.
Â
The Owls (4-3) would get back two runs in the third as sophomore
Kara Chambers opened the inning with a double to right field. After a single from junior
Natalie Rhodes scored Chambers, a single up the middle from sophomore
Missy Perkowski plated Rhodes to bring KSU within 9-2.
Â
Rhodes added KSU's third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as she recorded a bunt single and then advanced to second on her second stolen base of the game and fifth of the season. She came home a batter later on a fielding error by the TTU second baseman.
Â
That would be as close as the Owls would get despite leaving 11 runners on base in the game, including stranding six in the final three innings, as the Golden Eagles went on to win things 9-3.
Â
Both teams registered 10 hits and an error in the contest, with Rhodes leading the way for KSU with two runs, two hits and an RBI. Chambers and seniors
Sara Sikes and
Angie Dascoli each added two hits in the game.
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Morgan Sikes (0-1) took the loss after going 2.1 innings and giving up three hits and three runs, while junior
Paige Mathews and freshman
Logan Viers also saw action in the circle. Viers posted two strikeouts, while only giving up two hits and one run in 4.2 innings of work.
Â
Danielle Liberatore (1-3) earned the win for TTU, who got two hits and two runs from Kendall Hooper.
Â
The Owls will be in action next weekend, hosting the Kennesaw State-Georgia Tech Crossover on Feb. 21-22 at Bailey Park. KSU opens the tournament on Friday with a doubleheader against Tulsa, starting at 3 p.m. ET.Â
