ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Junior
Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) and sophomore
Carlos Segura Oliva (Malaga, Spain / Colegio El Limonar ) each carded even-par scores of 72 to lead the Kennesaw State men's golf team during the first round of the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate that opened Friday at the par-72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
The duo helped the Owls post a team total of 9-over par 297 to tie LSU for sixth place in the 14-team event. Host Georgia Tech recorded the only sub-par round of the day, registering an 8-under par total of 280 and holds a 10-shot lead over second-place North Carolina (290). Georgia (291) is third and followed by Clemson (294) and North Florida (295).
The field, one of the strongest Kennesaw State will compete in this season, includes six teams that are ranked in the
Golf Week/Nike Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll.
"All things considered, we played a really solid round of golf today," Kennesaw State head coach
Jay Moseley said. "The last hole really hurt us and because of that our score doesn't really show how well we played. We putted very well on these tricky greens. If we keep putting well and can eliminate the few mistakes off the tee and with the approach shots to the green, we will have a great round tomorrow (Saturday)."
Kennesaw State played the par-5 ninth hole, the team's 18th of the day, six over par as the Owls suffered two triple bogeys on the 566-yard hole.
Beck and Oliva are tied for 10th place to lead Kennesaw State. Both players are five-shots behind Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans, who opened with a 5-under 67, one shot better than Bailey Patrick of North Carolina. A pair of Yellow Jackets is tied for third after shooting 2-under par 70s, and five players are tied for fifth following 1-under par scores of 71.
"Jimmy played steady and solid as expected and I was very pleased with Carlos' round," Moseley said. "Tomorrow will be another great opportunity for us to improve and get better."
Senior
Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) is tied for 43rd after posting a 4-over par 76, while redshirt junior
Kelby Burton (Evans, Ga. / Lakeside HS ) (77) and freshman
Teremoana Beaucousin (Papara, Tahiti / Lycée de Papara ) (78) are tied for 49th and 58th, respectively. Burton was making his first appearance for the Owls since the 2011-12 season after redshirting a year ago, and the Carpet Capital Collegiate marks the college debut for Beaucousin.
The tournament continues on Saturday with second-round action and the Owls will be grouped with Middle Tennessee State and Texas, and tee off on the first hole beginning at 9 a.m. (ET). All the action can be followed live on the internet at
