DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman
Chris Guglielmo (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth HS) made an impressive collegiate debut and the Kennesaw State men's golf team turned in a solid first round during Sunday's opening of the Rees Jones Invitational at the par-72, 7,380-yard Haig Point Golf Club in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
Guglielmo carded a 2-under par 70 to lead the Owls to a 2-over par team score of 290 and a second-place showing. Kennesaw State trails South Florida (286) by two shots and is one stroke ahead of Charlotte and Liberty, who are tied for third at 3-over par 291.
"Overall, we are very happy with our first round result. This is only the first round; therefore we know we are in good position but also know that we have 36 more holes to play," Kennesaw State head coach
Jay Moseley said. "The golf course played about as easy as it could today so I thought we adjusted very well."
Guglielmo is currently tied with East Carolina's Al Dickens for second place, two shots behind South Florida's Chase Koepka, who posted a 4-under par 68.
"I was very happy for true freshman Chris Guglielmo to fire an under par round in his first round as an Owl," Moseley said. "Today was a glimpse of how good we can be but we know there is always room to improve."
Sophomore
Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) and redshirt junior
Kelby Burton (Evans, Ga. / Lakeside HS) are tied for 16th after firing 1-over par 73s. Senior
Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) and junior
Austin Vick (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS) both turned in 2-over par totals of 74 and are tied for 23rd, while freshman
Teremoana Beaucousin (Papara, Tahiti / Lycée de Papara) opened with an 81 and is 65th.
Vick, who is making his season debut, is playing in the tournament as an individual.
The Rees Jones Invitational continues with second round action on Monday and Kennesaw State will be grouped with Charlotte and UNC Wilmington, and will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:40 a.m. (ET). All the action can be followed live on the Internet at
