TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Peder Lunde Hermansson (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrine lundsgymnasiet) and sophomore Austin Vick (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS) improved on their opening-round performances, but it wasn’t enough for Kennesaw State to pick up ground during Tuesday’s second-round action of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Southwest Regional that is being contested at the par-70, 7,036-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

The Owls posted a 10-over par 290 and have a 36-hole total of 18-over par 578 and are in 13th place in the 14-team event. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships that will be held May 28-June 2 at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.

Third-ranked UCLA maintained its first-round lead, firing a 7-under par 273, and will enter Saturday’s final round with a 19-under par 541 total and 11-shot advantage over second-place UCF (552). The Knights tied for the low round of the day after shooting an 8-under par 272.

Georgia (554) is in third place and followed by Texas A&M (557) and Arizona State and Duke, who round out the top five with 2-under par totals of 558.

“It wasn’t there for us today for whatever reason. We just seemed to be struggling with some little simple things,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “Other teams are getting it done. We just came out flat today and never seemed to get anything going.

“It’s disappointing for the guys and for us, obviously, to make it this far and struggle,” Moseley added. “But, we’ve still got one more day to go and anything can happen. If we put together a special round, I always tell our guys to be prepared for greatness because you never know when it’s going to come, you never know when the birdies are going to come your away.”

Sophomore Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS), who shot a 1-over par 71, leads the Owls with a 1-over par total of 141 and is tied for 25th. Sophomore Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) turned in a 6-over par 76 and is tied for 29th with a 5-over par 145. Vick (147) is tied for 56th after carding a 1-over par 71, while Hermansson (148) is tied for 61st and senior Ben Greene (Duluth, Ga. / Peachtree Ridge HS) is tied for 63rd with a 9-over par score of 149.

“I played solid today. It’s not easy out there. Arizona golf is a lot different than what we’re accustomed to in Georgia,” Klotz said. “We’re just trying to help each other out there because it’s kind of rough. There are a lot of birdies out there, but there are also a lot of mistakes out there if you don’t know what you’re doing. We really have to ground it out and hopefully put up some good numbers tomorrow.”

The NCAA Southwest Regional concludes on Saturday with Kennesaw State scheduled to tee off 11:50 a.m. beginning on the 10th hole. The Owls will be grouped with Lehigh and individuals. All the action can be followed live on the Internet at www.golfstatresults.com.
