TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) carded a 1-under par 69 to lead Kennesaw State during the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Southwest Regional at the par-70, 7,036-yard Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State.

The Owls posted a first-round total of 8-over par 288 and are in 12th place. Third-ranked UCLA leads the 14-team field after opening with a 12-under par 268 and holds a 10-shot lead over ninth-ranked Duke (278). Austin Peay State (279) is third and followed by Georgia, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Clemson and UCF, who are all tied for fourth with even-par scores of 280.

“Overall today, it was not our sharpest day. I felt like, for the most part, the golf course played relatively easy,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “We did not convert hardly any of those (birdie) opportunities we had. We left a lot shots on the green.

“The guys know they are right in the middle of a bunched-up pack or slightly behind that so we have to play great the next two days to move up the leaderboard,” Moseley added. “There are a lot of great teams ahead of us, but this is a resilient group. They’ve proved that all year long so there is no doubt in my mind that we have the ability and talent to put together a couple solid rounds and get back into this thing.”

Beck’s 69 places him in a tie for 17th place, five shots behind co-leaders Dustin Korte of Austin Peay State and Poutus Widegren of UCLA. Both players turned in 6-under par 64s and hold a one-shot advantage over UCF’s Greg Eason (65). Anton Arboleda of UCLA and Texas A&M’s Johannes Veerman are tied for fourth after posting 3-under par scores of 67.

“It was a long day. It was hot as always out here. As a team I think we can do a lot better the next couple of days,” Beck said. “I just look forward to doing that and keep plugging along.”

Junior Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) is tied for 23rd after shooting an even-par 70. Senior Ben Greene (Duluth, Ga. / Peachtree Ridge HS) (74) is 57th, while senior Peder Lunde Hermansson (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrine lundsgymnasiet) (75) and sophomore Austin Vick (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS) (76) are tied for 61st and 64th, respectively.

The NCAA Southwest Regional continues on Friday with second-round action beginning at 10:55 (EDT) and Kennesaw State will be grouped with Arizona State and New Mexico State.
