KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State baseball team made its long-awaited return home to Stillwell Stadium but couldn’t hold off the surging Catamounts, falling to Western Carolina 9-3 in the final game of the two game-series between the two schools.
The Owls fall to 22-25 with the loss despite putting up 11 hits against WCU, who wins its second game over the owls this season, moving to 31-17.
The Catamounts picked up the win early on, scoring five runs in the top of the third inning, three coming off of Julian Ridings homerun and two more on an RBI double from Dykota Spiess.
WCU added one more in the fifth before the Owls got on the board as
Andy Almonte (Moca, Puerto Rico/Gordon College) drove a double to left field, scoring catcher
Brennan Morgan (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh HS) for the first KSU run of the game. Almonte was then sent home by
Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy) to cut the Catamount lead to 6-2.
After a three-run inning from WCU, the Owls scored their final run of the contest in the sixth after a lead-off triple from
Jacob Bruce (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock HS) and an RBI from
Kal Simmons (Nashville, Ga./Berrien HS), his team-leading 26
th of the year.
Simmons enjoyed a 3-for-4 afternoon with the one RBI while Bruce and Way each went 2-for-4 with Bruce scoring a run and Way driving one in. Almonte and
Peyton Hart (Sandy Cross, Ga./Franklin County HS) each had doubles during the game as well.
Nathan Harsh (Brunswick, Ga./Brunswick HS) took the loss on the hill, giving up five runs in three innings on four hits while striking out six.
Andrew Austin (Peachtree City, Ga./Air Force),
Jordan Hillyer (Dacula, Ga./Hebron Christian HS) and
Kevin McCoy (Gainsville, Fla./Andrew College) went the final three innings allowing just two hits while sitting down a pair of Catamount batters.
The Owls will now break for the weekend before heading to Georgia State on Wednesday, May 8, at 5 p.m. ET for the finale of a three-game season series with the Panthers as well as the final non-conference regular season game of 2013.
