MACON, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s tennis team earned its first-ever win over Mercer as the Owls defeated the Bears 4-3 on Saturday, April 6 at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
 
KSU improves to 5-12 on the season and 2-4 in the A-Sun, while Mercer falls to 4-13 and 2-4 in the league.
 
Despite an 8-5 win from freshman Tobi Menhofer and sophomore Louis Theodor at No. 1 doubles, the Owls entered singles action down 1-0 after a pair of 8-5 losses at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
 
Menhofer quickly evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Peter Tauchner on court one, but after consecutive wins by the Bears at No. 2 and 5 singles Mercer took a 3-1 lead.
 
The Owls, a point away from defeat, responded by posting wins in the final three singles matches to earn the 4-3 victory.
 
Freshman Maksim Yorsh started the rally with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Joao Pagan on court three, followed by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory from senior Gokalp Ozdemir against Austin Emmet on court six.
 
Theodor then clinched the match in thrilling fashion with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) win over Arsav Mohanty at No. 4 singles.
 
The Owls will wrap regular season play next weekend, as they host USC Upstate on Friday, April 12, followed by East Tennessee State on Saturday, April 13. Both matches will be played at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta, Ga.
