KENNESAW, Ga. – In the Sunday finale against Florida Gulf Coast University, the Kennesaw State baseball team couldn’t muster up the offensive power to take down the Eagles, falling 4-1 against the Atlantic Sun Conference foe.
The Owls fall to 18-15 on the year and 7-5 in the A-Sun with the loss as the Eagles take the series, 2-1, moving to 20-8 on the season and 6-3 in the league.
Sophomore
Jacob Bruce (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock HS) had two of the six Kennesaw State hits on the afternoon as the Owls stranded 12 runners on the bases.
After FGCU scored the game’s first two runs in the first two innings, the Owls made it a one run contest in the bottom of the third with a
Kal Simmons (Nashville, Ga./Berrian HS) score off of a
Chris McGowan (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill HS) RBI single.
The two teams played a back-and-forth contest for the next six innings until the Eagles put up a pair of insurance runs on a two-run homer to left field, the second homer of the game for FGCU, to make it 4-1.
KSU put on leadoff hitter
Andy Almonte (Moca, Puerto Rico/Gordon College) but failed to bring around a run in the ninth as the Eagles came away with the 4-1 win.
Bruce was the only Owl with multiple hits as Simmons,
Peyton Hart (Sandy Cross, Ga./Franklin County HS),
Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy) and Almonte each earning one, Almonte extending his hit-streak to 12 games.
Coming off of a complete game shutout win over Stetson last week, starting pitcher
Kevin Kyle (Atlanta, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College) took his first loss in five outings, going 6.2 innings allowing two runs and striking out five.
Kennesaw State will be back in action this Tuesday, April 9 at 5 p.m. ET as the Owls head to Georgia State for the rivalry matchup.
