KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team is prime contention for a tournament win and second straight top five showing after 36 holes of the Irish Creek Collegiate that opened Saturday at the par-71, 7,099-yard The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.
The Owls are currently in fifth place after posting rounds of 288 and 290 for a 10-over par 578, 11 shots behind second-round leader and No. 47th-ranked North Carolina. The Tar Heels are the only team under par with a 1-under 567, four strokes ahead of second-place Davidson (571). Kennesaw State is coming off a second place finish at the Linger Longer Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
North Carolina State and North Carolina-Wilmington are tied for third with 4-over par totals of 572 and six shots in front of Kennesaw State.
Sophomore
Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) helped the Owls get off to a good start as he opened the tournament with a 4-under 67 that put him atop the individual leaderboard after 18 holes. It also put Kennesaw State in second place after the first round following a 4-over 288.
Beck followed his first round with a 1-under par 70 and is currently in second place at 5-under par 137, one shot behind Richard Fountain of Davidson Fountain posted scores of 70-66 and is at 6-under par 136.
North Carolina’s Michael McGowan (138) is in third and followed by Albin Choi (139) of North Carolina State and North Carolina-Wilmington’s Thomas Bass and Payne McLeod who are tied for fifth at 2-under par 140.
Sophomore
Austin Vick (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS), junior
Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) and senior
Peder Lunde Hermansson (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrine lundsgymnasiet) are part of a group of eight players tied for 33rd with a 5-over par score of 147.
Senior
Ben Greene (Duluth, Ga. / Peachtree Ridge HS) is tied for 66th at 11-over par 153.
