JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Kennesaw State starting pitcher
Stephen Janas made it back-to-back complete game wins as he propelled the Owls to a 4-1 victory over Atlantic Sun Conference foe East Tennessee State on Friday night.
Janas (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) picked up his sixth straight win from the mound, giving up just nine hits in as many innings of work and striking out three. The junior gave up just one run, coming in the ninth inning, making it 17 straight innings without allowing a run until the Bucs managed their lone score of the contest in the bottom of the last.
KSU improves to 22-22 on the year with the win and picked up A-Sun win number 10, moving to 10-9 in the league standings.
Chris McGowan (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill HS) led off the scoring for the Owls with a double to left-center field, his team-leading 11
th, in the top of the seventh, followed by a bunt-single from
Max Pentecost (Winder, Ga./Winder-Barrow HS) to put runners in the corners with no outs.
Peyton Hart (Sandy Cross, Ga./Franklin County HS) then laid down his 12
th sacrifice bunt of the year to drive in McGowan for the 1-0 lead. McGowan scored the second run of the ballgame when he headed home on a throwing error with
Andy Almonte (Moca Puerto, Rico/Gordon College) driving in one more for the 3-0 KSU advantage.
In the eighth, Pentecost added on one more for good measure as he singled in
Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy) to give the Owls all they would need, taking the 4-1 series-opening win over the Buccaneers.
The offense came through for Janas, getting help from Almonte and Pentecost who both had 3-for-4 nights with an RBI each as well. Pentecost improves his season average to a team-high .325 while Almonte bumped his over .300 to .309.
The top of the lineup produced once again for head coach
Mike Sansing with the first five batters belting all nine hits.
Janas remains undefeated on the mound at 7-0 after the win over the Bucs, forcing 14 ground-ball outs in the process.
The two teams will play a scheduled doubleheader tomorrow, April 27, with game one scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
