KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team sent Head Coach
Scott Whitlock out on a high note in his final game at Bailey Park with a 6-1 win over UAB as the Owls split a doubleheader with the Blazers (30-13) on Thursday, April 25. KSU (32-18) fell 3-0 in game one.
Down one for much of game two after an RBI single up the middle from UAB’s Whitney Fletcher in the top of the first inning, Kennesaw State stormed back in the bottom of the sixth with six runs on a pair of home runs from sophomore
Kaylee Williams (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain HS) and freshman
Caitlin Fowler (Flowery Branch, Ga./Flowery Branch HS).
Back-to-back singles from freshman
Kara Chambers (Kennesaw, Ga./Allatoona HS) and sophomore
Natalie Rhodes (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) and a walk issued to senior
Sharon Swanson (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) set the stage for the sophomore from Kennesaw. Only hours removed from a clutch three-run home run against Georgia Tech on Wednesday night, Williams hammered a grand slam to deep left field for her third long ball of the season.
Junior
Angie Dascoli (West Melbourne, Fla./State College of Florida) kept the inning alive with a two-out single up the middle, before Fowler connected on her first career home run, a bomb to right field, to put KSU up 6-1.
Senior
Abbey Mixon (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) and the Owl defense then secured the win by recording their second double play of the game for the contest’s final two outs. Mixon (13-9) collected seven strikeouts in a complete game performance, while only allowing six hits and one earned run.
Kennesaw State notched six hits in the win as Williams led the Kennesaw State offense, going 2-for-3 plus four RBI and a run. With another four RBI on Thursday, Williams has collected eight RBI in the last two days.
Lannah Campbell (8-4) dropped the game for the Blazers, with Caitlin Attfield posting two hits in the loss.
UAB took an early lead in game one as Attfield drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to go ahead 1-0 on the Owls. The Blazers then added runs in the fifth and the seventh on a passed ball and an RBI groundout from Heather Pearson to take the win.
Kennesaw State posted three hits, while UAB notched five. Sophomore
Monica Vickery (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe HS) took the game one lost, allowing only three hits and one earned run in five innings of work. She moves to 2-4 on the season.
Leigh Streetman (11-6) registered six strikeouts in a complete game victory for the Blazers, who got two hits each from Attfield and Chandler Orr.
Kennesaw State will conclude the 2013 season this weekend as the Owls travels to Johnson City, Tenn., for its final regular season series of the season with a three-game series against Atlantic Sun Conference opponent East Tennessee State on Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28.
