BRASELTON, Ga. – With challenging winds and firming greens to contend with, sophomore
Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) led a charging Kennesaw State men’s golf team during second-round action at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships that continued Monday at the par-72, 7,003-yard The Legends at Chateau Elan hosted by The Legends Club in Braselton, Ga.
The Owls, helped by Beck’s 1-under par 71, made up eight shots on No. 17 and first-round leader North Florida after carding a 5-over par 293 and moved to within a shot of the Ospreys at 15-over par 591. North Florida leads the tournament at 14-over par 590 and maintains its lead over Kennesaw State, which was the lone team to break 300 on the day.
“We actually got off to a slow start. A couple guys were a few over par through the first five or six holes, but we knew going into the round it was going to be tough the way the golf course was set up with tough conditions,” head coach
Jay Moseley said. “We’re familiar with this place and know what to expect.
“I told the guys to just go out and play with confidence and that they’re good enough to play well out here and that’s what I think we saw on the back nine,” Moseley added. “The guys just played fearless golf and played the way I know they’re capable of and they believe in themselves.”
Beck, who was one of just four players to shoot below par during the second round, led a balanced scoring effort by the Owls who counted scores of 71, 72, 75 and 75 and have four players currently in the Top 10.
“We’re right where we want to be. We’re one-shot behind and I think we can do a lot better,” Beck said. “This course is as tough as it will ever be when the wind is up and the greens are firm. It’s just a tough course all around and I think we’ve handled it well and we look forward to tomorrow.”
Sophomore
Austin Vick (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS), who opened the day in a four-way tie atop the leaderboard, shot an even-par 72 and holds a three-shot lead at 1-under par 143. Beck, along with senior
Ben Greene and senior
Peder Lunde Hermansson (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrine lundsgymnasiet) are tied for 10th with 7-over par totals of 151. Greene and Hermansson both posted 3-over par scores of 75 on Tuesday.
“We all knew it was going to be tough, we just grinded it out and it was just a good day for us,” Vick said. “My putter has been my crutch so far. It’s really helped me make a lot of puts and I really haven’t made a lot of mistakes. That’s been what has helped me.”
Sophomore Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) is tied for 33rd at 15-over par 159.
“We feel great about the position we’re in. Obviously, we picked up ground on North Florida. They’re a great team, they’ve got some great players,” Moseley said. “But, we know that if we play our best we can give them a run for their money.”
The A-Sun Championships conclude on Tuesday with final-round action. Kennesaw State will again be grouped with North Florida and East Tennessee State, and will tee off from the first hole beginning at 8:50 a.m. (ET). All the action can be followed live on the Internet at
