KENNESAW, Ga. - Building off the momentum of five straight top 10 showings, the Kennesaw State men’s golf team will seek its second-ever conference championship when it opens play at the 10-team Atlantic Sun Conference Championships that begins Sunday at The Legends at Chateau Elan hosted by The Legends Club in Braselton, Ga.
The format calls for 54 holes to be played over three days with 18 holes scheduled each day. Sunday’s has the Owls grouped with North Florida and East Tennessee State scheduled to tee off at 8:50 a.m. (ET) on the first hole. Second and third round action continues on Monday and Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. (ET) each day with teams teeing off from both the first and 10th holes.

THE COURSE: The Legends at Chateau is a par-72, 7,003-yard layout and is hosting the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships for the fourth consecutive year.
THE FIELD: The 10-team field includes East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida, Northern Kentucky, USC Upstate and Stetson. North Florida (No. 17) and Kennesaw State (No. 56) are the top two teams in the tournament according to Golfstat.
ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: This is the 35th year that the Atlantic Sun Conference has been hosting a men’s golf championship. North Florida (875, +11) is the defending champion after recording a four-shot victory over East Tennessee State. Kennesaw State placed third a year ago, and captured its first-ever A-Sun Conference Championship two years ago, finishing nine shots ahead of North Florida. Stetson’s Sam Ryder claimed individual medalist honors last season with a 3-under par 213. The Owls’ Jeff Karlsson won the individual title in 2011 with a 6-under par 207.

LAST TIME OUT: The Owls turned in one of their most impressive performances of the season at the Linger Longer Intercollegiate two weeks ago when they finished second at the 14-team field that included six teams ranked in Golfstat’s Top 50. Kennesaw State recorded an even-par 56-hole total in the rain-shortened event and finished only behind No. 2 Alabama, which won the team title for a third straight year with a 16-under par score of 560. The Owls finished ahead of No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Georgia Tech and No. 12 Georgia. Sophomore Austin Vick was Kennesaw State’s top finisher, tying for fifth with a 3-under par 141 following rounds of 70-71.
OWLS CLAIM A-SUN GOLFER OF THE WEEK HONORS: Kennesaw State golfers have earned A-Sun Conference Golfer of the Week six times this season. The latest recipient of the honor is sophomore Jimmy Beck who was recognized on Apr. 10 after claiming individual medalist honors at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. Beck recorded rounds of 67-70-68 for an 8-under par 205. Sophomore Austin Vick was honored as Golfer of the Week on Mar. 27 after tying for fifth at the Linger Longer Intercollegiate. Vick recorded rounds of 70-71 for a 3-under par total 141. Sophomore Jimmy Beck has twice been honored, earning Co-Player of the Week for Sept. 26 following a tie for fifth place at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, and claiming individual medalist honors at the Pinetree Intercollegiate. Senior Ben Greene claimed player of the week accolades on Sept. 12 after placing sixth at the season-opening Carpet Capital Intercollegiate and senior Peder Lunde Hermansson was tabbed the A-Sun Conference’s Golfer of the Week for Feb. 6 following a seventh-place showing at Arizona Intercollegiate.
JIMMY BECK QUALIFIES FOR JONES CUP: Sophomore Jimmy Beck qualified for the Prestigious Jones on Jan. 21 after posting a 2-under par 70 at the par-72, 7,013-yard Ocean Forest Golf Course in Sea Island, Ga. The field is comprised of the best amateurs from around the world, with 10 different countries being represented. Beck tied for 18th in the 90-person event that was held Feb. 1-3 at the Ocean Forest Golf Club. Beck turned in rounds of 78-77-71 for a 10-over par 226 total.
KENNESAW STATE AT THE 2012 NCAA ANN ARBOR REGIONAL: Kennesaw State traveled to the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., and placed ninth out of 13 teams. The Owls posted a 54-hole score of 16-over par 866 total. Kennesaw State was led by senior Matt Nagy who tied for 25th place following a 1-over par score of 214.
NATIONAL HONORS: The Kennesaw State men’s golf team received a President’s Special Recognition by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better. Individually, junior Ben Greene and senior Jeff Karlsson were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the GCAA. To be eligible for All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
THREE OWLS EARN A-SUN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: Senior Matt Nagy was named to the All-Atlantic Sun Conference first team and senior Jeff Karlsson was voted second team all-conference. Rookie Jimmy Beck was voted to the All-Freshmen team in a vote of the league’s coaches.
