JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a dominating performance in the series opener against the University of North Florida, the Kennesaw State baseball team couldn’t keep the momentum rolling on Saturday afternoon, taking a 9-1 loss to even up the Atlantic Sun Conference series at one game each.
Kennesaw State (21-20, 9-8 A-Sun) did manage to knock North Florida (28-12, 10-4 A-Sun) starting pitcher Nick Allbritton for nine hits, but five costly errors from the KSU infield along with 12 this form the home team gave the Ospreys an eight-run game two win.
The one run for KSU came in the top of the second after designated hitter
Max Pentecost (Winder, Ga./Winder-Barrow HS) singled to start things off and was driven in by catcher
Brennan Morgan (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh HS) to cut what was a 2-0 UNF lead down to just one run.
The two teams played scoreless ball into the bottom of the fourth when North Florida lunged out to a 7-2 lead after scoring five in the bottom half on five hits and two KSU errors. The Ospreys then scored their final two one inning later for the 9-1 win.
Andy Almonte (Moca, Puerto Rico/Gordon College) had himself a 3-for-4 afternoon with three singles while helping turn three double plays in the field. Pentecost was the only other KSU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 while scoring the team’s only run.
From the hill,
Travis Dean (Boston, Mass./Newton South HS) took the loss, lasting four innings and giving up five earned runs.
Alan Busenitz (Athens, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College) came in in relief, going three innings giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out a pair followed by
Catlan Kendrick (Sharpsburg, Ga./Northgate HS) throwing a hitless bottom of the eighth.
The squads will square off again tomorrow, April 21, as the series concludes at 1 p.m. ET with senior
Kevin Kyle (Atlanta, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College) getting the start for the Owls.
