JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Starting pitcher
Stephen Janas went the distance on Friday night, leading the Kennesaw State baseball team to a 4-0 shutout win over the Atlantic Sun Conference leading North Florida Ospreys.
Janas (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) held the nation’s leading team in hits to just five during the win while striking out four and walking only one, leading the Owls to a 21-19 record and a 9-7 mark in the A-Sun while earning his fifth straight win in the process, moving to 6-0 on the year and slicing his ERA to just 0.70.
The Owls also showed up offensively, belting double-digit hits for the second straight game, collecting 11 on the night while sinking the Osprey’s to 27-12 overall and 9-4 in the A-Sun, snapping a six-game winning streak for UNF as well.
KSU picked up two runs in the top of the third as the Owls strung together three hits, all with two outs, starting with a
Jacob Bruce (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock HS) single followed up with an RBI triple from
Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy), his third three-bagger of the year.
Chris McGowan (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill HS) then singled in Way for the 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, it was Way again driving in Bruce with a double to right-center field after the two knocked back-to-back doubles off of UNF starter Tommy Organ. Way then made it home after a wild pitch from Organ for the four-run edge.
Way had his team-leading 12
th game with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bruce and Pentecost each collected a pair of hits as well with Pentecost also earning a RBI as the Owls had three hits as a team for extra bases.
The Owls also turned a pair of double plays and committed no errors in the field during the contest behind Janas, who earned his first career complete game for KSU.
The two teams will play game two of the three-game series tomorrow, April 20, at 1 p.m. ET with
Travis Dean (Boston, Mass./Newton South HS) getting the start on the hill.
