Women’s Tennis Make it Four-Straight in A-Sun Play with 4-3 Win over USC Upstate

MARIETTA, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team continued its late season surge as the Owls notched their fourth-straight win in Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 4-3 victory over USC Upstate on Friday, April 12 at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center.
 
KSU improves to 9-10 on the season and 4-3 in conference action, while the Spartans fall to 12-7 and 4-3 in the A-Sun.
 
After dropping their doubles match on court three, the Owls responded with back-to-back wins at No. 2 and 1 doubles to take a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action. Sophomores Virginie Stein and  Tamara Plocher first registered an 8-2 win over Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas on court two, before junior Alexandra Apostu and sophomore Jana Hueckinghaus posted their sixth-straight conference win on court one with an 8-5 defeat of Julie Bell and Taylor Cohen to improve to 6-0 in league play.
 
Upstate quickly tied the match with a win at No. 5 singles, but the lead would not last long as Apostu and Hueckinghaus tallied consecutive singles wins on courts three and two to take a 3-1 lead. Apostu dispatched of Rojas, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Hueckinghaus earned a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Constanze Kuerten at No. 2 singles.
 
The Spartans moved within 3-2 with a win at No. 6 singles, before Stein closed out the win for the Owls with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 against von Stryk on court one.
 
Kennesaw State will finish up the regular season with Senior Day on Saturday, April 13. The Owls host East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. (ET) and will be celebrating the career of senior Therese Lagerkvist at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta, Ga.
 
KSU has already solidified a spot in next week’s A-Sun Championship, but is looking to move up the standings on the final day of regular season competition. The Owls can earn the No. 3 seed with a win against ETSU, combined with an Upstate win against Mercer on Saturday. With a loss, the Owls would be the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
