DELAND, Fla. – With a four-hit, complete game shutout from
Kevin Kyle, the Kennesaw State baseball team picked up the series win over Stetson with a 4-0 Saturday afternoon victory over the Hatters in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Kyle (Atlanta, Ga./Georgia Perimeter Coll.) went the full nine innings facing the minimum number of batters in all but the first inning while striking out three en route to picking up his fourth straight victory from the mound.
The Owls now hold a 17-11 overall record and are 6-3 in the A-Sun after taking back-to-back conference series win and are 5-1 in their last six league games.
Kennesaw State scored three runs in the top of the second inning after catcher
Max Pentecost (Winder, Ga./Winder-Barrow HS) reached on an error and was then driven in from a
Ryan Raper (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove HS) RBI single to score the game’s first run.
Raper came around to score himself as
Kal Simmons (Nashville, Ga./Berrien HS) picked up his team-leading 23
rd RBI of the season before
Andy Almonte (Moca, Puerto Rico/Gordon College) was driven in by
Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy) for the early 3-0 lead.
KSU added on one more in the eighth when right fielder
Alex Liquori (Brooks, Ga./Whitewater HS) came around on an Almonte two-out double to make it 4-0. Liquori drew the walk with two gone in the inning before stealing second and making it home on the Almonte RBI.
The shutout was the second in three games for KSU after taking a 4-0 win over the Hatters (13-15, 2-5 A-Sun) in the Thursday night series opener.
As a team, the Owls were good for eight hits from seven different players with Simmons the only player bringing in multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Almonte had the only hit for extra bases with his eighth inning double.
McGowan and Liquori went on to steal a base as well.
Kyle threw just 104 pitches in the nine innings, forcing 17 ground balls and bumping his ERA down to 2.40 as he moves to 5-2 on the season.
Up next for the Owls will be an action-packed week, starting off this Tuesday, April 2, with a 6 p.m. ET game against Georgia at Stillwell Stadium. On Wednesday, the Owls head to top 25 opponent Georgia Tech before welcoming in Florida Gulf Coast for a three-game series.
