DELAND, Fla. – Right handed pitcher
Stephen Janas picked up his third victory of the season as his strong start brought the Kennesaw State baseball team its seventh straight victory, shutting out the Hatters of Stetson University 4-0.
Janas (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) went 6.1 innings giving up just five hits to drop his ERA to 0.32 on the year as the Owls improve to 16-10 on the season and 5-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
The Hatters, now 12-14 on the season and 1-3 in the A-Sun, picked up just five hits off of the KSU pitching staff as the Owls earned the series opening win on Thursday night at Melching Field.
After two scoreless innings, senior
Peyton Hart (Sandy Cross, Ga./Franklin County HS) put the Owls on the board with a two RBI single through the right side to bring home
Kal Simmons (Nashville, Ga./Berrien HS) and
Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy) for the 2-0 Kennesaw State lead.
Catcher
Max Pentecost (Winder, Ga./Winder-Barrow HS) came home to score one in the top of the fourth on an
Alex Liquori (Brooks, Ga./Whitewater HS) RBI with the final black and gold run coming one inning later off of a
Chris McGowan (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill HS) RBI double that scored Way.
Will Solomon (Columbus, Ga./Columbus HS) and
Justin McCalvin (Leesburg, Ga./Lee County HS) came in and threw the final 2.2 innings from the rubber with Solomon giving up two hits and McCalvin holding the Hatters hitless.
As a team, KSU earned 10 hits in the ballgame, two each from Hart, McGowan and
Jacob Bruce (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock HS) with Hart driving in a pair of runs as well.
Way had a 20-game hit streak come to an end during the win but did aid in the effort with two runs scored after drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow, March 29, in game two of the series with a 6:30 p.m. start time as the Owls look for win number eight in a row.
