KENNESAW, Ga. – Despite outhitting Auburn University on Tuesday night at Stillwell Stadium, the Kennesaw State baseball team couldn’t bring home the runs as the Owls took the 8-3 loss, splitting the season series with the Tigers.
Sophomore
Jacob Bruce (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock HS) provided the offensive spark for Kennesaw State (9-8), going 4-for-4 at the plate with three singles and a double. Second baseman
Andy Almonte (Moca, Puerto Rico/Gordon College) was the only other Owl batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The Tigers (13-3) did their damage on the scoreboard in the first four innings, putting up all eight runs in the first half of the ballgame. KSU starter
Jordan Hillyer (Dacula, Ga./Hebron Christian HS) lasted just 1.1 innings, giving up four runs before being replaced by
Jacob Moore (Acworth, Ga./Woodland HS) who gave up three.
KSU put runs on the board in the middle half of the contest, one in the fifth and two in the sixth on a RBI single from Almonte and a
Kal Simmons (Nashville, Ga./Berrien HS) base hit that drove in two.
In relief it was Catlin Kendrick (Sharpsburg, Ga./Northgate HS),
Travis Bergen (McDonough, Ga./Woodland HS),
Justin McCalvin (Leesburg, Ga./Lee County HS) and
James Connell (Roswell, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College) who blanked the Tigers in the final three innings, not allowing a hit while striking out three.
Six Owls picked up hits during the game as KSU outhit its Southeastern Conference opponent 10-7. The Auburn batters capitalized on eight walks from the black and gold bullpen and four hit batters.
Hillyer took the loss and evens his record to 1-1 on the season while Dillon Ortman earns the win, moving him to 1-1 as well.
The Owls will be back at it again tomorrow, March 13, as cross-town rival Georgia State arrives for a 5 p.m. matchup on the diamond.
