KSU is coming off of a 1-1 record in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial held Feb. 23-24 at Bailey Park. The Owls first defeated Bowling Green 5-0 on Saturday behind senior pitcher Abbey Mixon’s (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) three-hit, five-strikeout performance. KSU then fell to Southeastern Conference foe Virginia Tech 4-3 on the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth inning.

For their early season success, the Owls are receiving a vote in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top-25 poll, joining Atlantic Sun Conference rivals USC Upstate and Florida Gulf Coast.

In the 12 games the Owls have played in 2013, seven have been decided by a single run. KSU holds a 5-2 record in one-run games, including a pair of eighth inning victories over Coastal Carolina and SIU Edwardsville.

Kennesaw State is the top A-Sun team in the circle in terms of earned run average at 1.14. Junior pitcher Amanda Henderson (Covington, Ga./Eastside HS) and Mixon are ranked second and eighth, respectively, in the conference for ERA, with Henderson owning an ERA of 0.75 and Mixon posting a 1.43 ERA. The pair have collected a combined 97 strikeouts in 76 innings, with Henderson’s 61 strikeouts leading the league in that category.

The Owls next host UAB in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 5, at Bailey Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET).
