Owls End Road Trip at East Tennessee State on Monday

THE GAME: The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team will look to bounce back after a road loss at USC Upstate this past Saturday, remaining on the road to take on East Tennessee State in a 7 p.m. ET contest in Johnson City, Tenn. on Monday, Feb. 18.
 
The black and gold, now 7-18 on the season and 3-10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, are looking to make headway in the league standings heading towards the postseason tournament with just five regular season games remaining on the 2012-13 docket.
 
The Buccaneers of ETSU are aiming to put a stop to a four-game losing skid, sitting at 6-15 overall and 4-10 in the league standings after a 67-58 loss to Mercer on Saturday.

THE OPPONENT
ETSU is looking to better the Owls for the second time this season and snap a four-game losing streak in the process after the Bucs latest loss to Mercer on Saturday afternoon.

Forward Destiny Mitchell leads the way in the scoring category with 11.8 points per game, as well as on the boards with an 8.6 rebounds per game average.

The Bucs are putting 63 points per game but have struggled on the other end of the floor, letting in nearly 74 points to their opponents on average.

THE SERIES
ETSU leads the all-time series, 9-1, after taking the last meeting in Kennesaw, Ga., by a two-point margin, 61-59, on Jan. 19, 2013.
 
Senior Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) finished up with 13 points and eight rebounds while Chantel Kennedy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Colorado St.) ended the night with 12 points, all coming in the first half.

Kristina Wells (Douglasville, Ga./Douglas County HS) led the Owls in the rebound category, coming away with nine to go with her six assists and three steals. The combination of Wells, Kennedy and Gideon each played in 38 of the 40 minutes or more.
 
LAST OUTING
The freshmen combination of Chelsea Mason (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West HS) and Nicole Adams (New Port Richey, Fla./Gulf HS) combined for half of the Owls’ points as the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team took a 57-48 Atlantic Sun Conference loss at USC Upstate on Saturday night.

Adams put in a team-high 13 points on three three-pointers while Mason added in 11 as the Owls fell to 7-18 on the season and 3-10 in the A-Sun, snapping a two-game winning streak in the process.
 
THE NUMBERS
The Owls are committing just 11 fouls per game, putting KSU at No. 3 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per contest.
 
KSU is holding opponents to just a .252 three-point field goal percentage, the second best perimeter defense in the A-Sun and top 50 nationally.
 
NEXT UP
The Owls will head back home after Monday’s game, facing off against Lipscomb this Saturday, Feb. 23 at noon before hosting Northern Kentucky on Senior Day Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the KSU Convocation Center.

NEWS AND NOTES
Gideon’s Double-Doubles
Senior Sametria Gideon is the only player in the A-Sun to be averaging a double-double on the season with 11.6 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game. Gideon continues to lead the A-Sun in rebounding with her 10.3 boards per outing average.
 
Gideon in Rare Company
Gideon is one of just four active players in the country to be a school’s career points and rebounds leader. The only 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound player in school history, Gideon now has 1,181 points and 1,015 rebounds to her name.
 
Mason Newcomer of the Week
Chelsea Mason earned her fourth A-Sun Newcomer of the Week award after helping lead the Owls to back-to-back wins with a 16.5 points per game average and 7.5 rebounds.
 
Wells Back in the top 10
Wells has worked her way into the top 10 scorers in the A-Sun with an 11.8 points per game average after scoring 14 during the team’s win over North Florida.
 
Milestones to look out for
Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) is seeking her 1,000th career point, holding steady at 917, and her 200th three-pointer, currently sitting at 197 makes from beyond the arc.
