SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The freshmen combination of
Chelsea Mason and
Nicole Adams combined for half of the Owls’ points as the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team took a 57-48 Atlantic Sun Conference loss at USC Upstate on Saturday night.
Adams (New Port Richey, Fla./Gulf HS) put in a team-high 13 points on three three-pointers while Mason (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West HS) added in 11 as the Owls fell to 7-18 on the season and 3-10 in the A-Sun, snapping a two-game winning streak in the process.
The Owls led just once at Upstate (10-15, 6-8 A-Sun), a 1-0 edge in the early seconds on a
Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) free-throw attempt before the Spartans gained the lead for good moments later on a layup.
A 10-0 run by the home team put Upstate up by 11 at the 11:51 mark, but the Owls managed to cut the lead down to six with a jumper by Mason and a triple by Adams to make it 14-8 Spartans. Upstate increased their lead back up to 11 as the Owls made the lone basket for either team in the final five minutes of the first half to cut the deficit back to single digits at 25-16 on a
Chantel Kennedy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Colorado St.) jumper, sending the game into the half with the Spartans leading by nine.
KSU got as close as seven points in the second half with a
Christine Wylie (Ballarat, Australia/Ballarat HS) 10-footer to make it 32-25 Spartans with 12 minutes to go before Upstate bumped its lead back to 11 shortly thereafter, taking the win 57-48 with an Adams three cutting it down to a nine-point win at the buzzer.
“We just didn’t bring the energy tonight,” Kennesaw State head coach
Nitra Perry said. “Chelsea and Nicole came out ready to play, but we need that same effort from all five on the court. Everybody needs to step up and be ready.”
The Owls cleaned up on the glass, outrebounding the Spartans by a 37-28 margin, led by Gideon’s 11 boards and Kennedy’s seven. Gideon also chipped in with seven points as did
Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy).
The Owls will remain on the road, heading to Johnson City, Tenn. for a 7 p.m. game at East Tennessee State on Monday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.
