Owls Looking For Third Straight Win At USC Upstate

THE GAME:
The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team will look for its third straight win this Saturday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. ET for an ESPN3 featured game at Atlantic Sun Conference opponent USC Upstate.
 
KSU, now 7-17 overall and 3-9 in the A-Sun after back-to-back home wins over Jacksonville and North Florida, is starting to heat up with just six games remaining in the regular season.
 
Upstate is holding off at 9-15 on the season and 5-8 in the league after suffering consecutive losses at Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.

THE OPPONENT
Upstate is coming off of consecutive losses after playing the top two teams in the league in Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson over the past seven days.

Tee’Ara Copney is one of the top scorers in the league thus far, averaging 12.8 points per game with 307 total points this season.

The Spartans are one of the top three-point shooting teams in the conference, holding a 32-percent success rate from beyond the arc.

THE SERIES
The all-time series is all knotted up at five wins each after the Spartans took a 61-52 win on Jan. 21 of this season in the KSU Convocation Center.
 
Kristina Wells (Douglasville, Ga./Douglas County HS) once again led the black and gold with a 14-point outing while freshman Chelsea Mason (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West HS) finished up with 12 and senior Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) chipped in 10.
 
Holliday also added four assists and a pair of steals to her stat line while Wells came away with four steals, giving the guard 12 takeaways in her last three outings.
 
LAST OUTING
For the first time this season the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team made it back-to-back wins as the Owls topped the University of North Florida 50-40 in the KSU Convocation Center Monday night.

It was a total team effort as six of the seven players to see action scored baskets as the black and gold move to 7-17 on the year and 3-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
 
Wells led the Owls with 14 points while Mason made it back-to-back double-digit scoring outings with her 13. As a team, KSU enjoyed a 43-percent success rate from the field, going 18-of-42 with six three-pointers, two each from Mason and Holliday.

On the glass, the Owls once again outrebounded their opponent, taking in 36 boards to UNF’s 30. KSU brought in 30 rebounds on the defensive end, limiting the Ospreys to just four second-chance points.

Individually, Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) led both teams with her 11 rebounds with #Chantel Kennedy’s# (Brooklyn, N.Y./Colorado St.) eight right behind.
 
THE NUMBERS
Gideon is one of just a handful players in the nation to average a double-double with 11.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
 
The three-point defense of KSU is one of the best in the A-Sun and one of the top 100 in the nation, holding opponents to just a 26.2 percent success rate from beyond the arc.
 
The Owls are committing just 11 fouls per game, putting KSU at No. 3 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per contest.
 
NEXT UP
After road games at Upstate and East Tennessee State, the Owls will return home for their last two games of the season on their home floor, taking on Lipscomb on Feb. 23 at noon followed by Senior Day on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. against Northern Kentucky.

NEWS AND NOTES
Gideon’s Double-Doubles
Senior Sametria Gideon is the only player in the A-Sun to be averaging a double-double on the season with 11.6 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game. Gideon continues to lead the A-Sun in rebounding with her 10.3 boards per outing average.
 
Gideon in Rare Company
Gideon is one of just four active players in the country to be a school’s career points and rebounds leader. The only 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound player in school history, Gideon now has 1,181 points and 1,015 rebounds to her name.
 
Mason Newcomer of the Week
Chelsea Mason earned her fourth A-Sun Newcomer of the Week award after helping lead the Owls to back-to-back wins with a 16.5 points per game average and 7.5 rebounds.
 
Wells Back in the top 10
Wells has worked her way into the top 10 scorers in the A-Sun with an 11.8 points per game average after scoring 14 during the team’s win over North Florida.
 
Milestones to look out for
Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) is seeking her 1,000th career point, holding steady at 910, and her 200th three-pointer, currently sitting at 197 makes from beyond the arc.
