Owls Looking to #BeatMercer in Saturday Afternoon Rivalry Face-off

THE GAME: The Owls will look to keep the momentum rolling after a big road win over Lipscomb this past week as the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team heads to Atlantic Sun Conference rival Mercer on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
 
After earning her first conference win at the helm of KSU basketball, head coach Nitra Perry brings in a 5-16 overall record and a 1-8 mark in the A-Sun, with the majority of the team’s wins coming on the road this season. The Bears are holding steady in the top half of the league with a 13-7 overall record and a 7-2 conference standing.

THE OPPONENT
Mercer takes to their home floor as one of the hottest teams in the A-Sun as the Bears are currently enjoying a seven-game win streak in league play.
Sophomore guard Precious Bridges leads the conference in terms of scoring, putting in an average of 18.4 points per game with 368 total points scored. 6-5 sophomore center Teanna Robinson is now third in the A-Sun in rebounding, pulling in an average of 8.4 boards per game.

THE SERIES
Kennesaw State leads the rival Bears in the all-time series, 8-5, but was bettered by Mercer in the last meeting, 71-45, earlier this season at the KSU Convocation Center.
 
Senior Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) made it back-to-back double-doubles and her eighth of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds during the game while freshman Chelsea Mason (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West HS) led the black and gold with 14 points.
 
LAST OUTING
With a 16-rebound effort during a Kennesaw State women’s basketball 55-39 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb, KSU senior Sametrie Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) eclipsed the 1,000 rebound mark for her career, becoming the first Owl with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and the ninth player in the league history to do so.
 
The Owls came away with their first conference win of the season and the first in the head coaching career of Perry as the Owls move to 5-16 overall and 1-8 in the A-Sun.
 
The Owls shattered their previous high in team rebounds with 56 with six players pulling down six or more including Gideon’s season-high 16 and a career-high nine from Nicole Adams (New Port Richey, Fla./Gulf HS).

16 offensive rebounds for KSU helped bring the Owls 16 second chance points.

KSU also put four players in double-figures scoring led by Mason’s game-high 17. Adams finished up with a career-best of 15, the second straight game she has broken her career high in scoring, while Gideon made it back-to-back double-doubles and 11 total on the year with her 13 points. Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) was the fourth in double-figures with 10.
 
Gideon also tied a career-high with five blocks as Holliday dished out six assists.
 
THE NUMBERS
The Owls are coming off of their best rebounding game of the season, bringing in 56 during the win over Lipscomb.
 
KSU is now averaging 6.3 steals per game in conference games only, picking up 57 total takeaways in nine games.
 
The Owls are committing just 12 fouls per game, putting KSU at No. 5 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per contest.
 
NEXT UP
The Owls will receive a much needed respite from competition in the upcoming week with no Monday night contest for the first time since Jan. 7. Up next will be back-to-back home games starting on Saturday, Feb. 9, with the Dolphins of Jacksonville University at 12 p.m.

NEWS AND NOTES
Gideon’s Historic Night
Senior Sametria Gideon became the first player in school history and the ninth in A-Sun history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds when she earned 16 boards against Lipscomb. Gideon now has back-to-back double-doubles and 11 total on the year after a 13 point, 16 rebound night at Lipscomb, putting her in the top 20 nationally in that category. Gideon is also the only player in the league to average a double-double with 11.1 ppg and 10.5 rpg, the highest rebounding average in the A-Sun.
 
Adams Steps In
Nicole Adams played in all 40 minutes against Lipscomb, the first time she has played an entire contest, while putting up career highs in both points (15) and rebounds (nine). Adams has now topped her career high in the points category in consecutive games after beating her previous best with eight points at Northern Kentucky.
 
Wylie Off the Bench
Coming off of the bench, junior center Christine Wylie (Ballarat, Australia/Ballarat HS) has totaled five blocks in the last two games and now has 11 on the season.
 
Milestones to look out for
Holliday is seeking her 1,000th career point, holding steady at 879, and her 200th three-pointer, currently sitting at 194 makes from beyond the arc.
