KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team rallied from a final-round four-shot deficit to capture the Pinetree Intercollegiate that concluded Tuesday at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga.
The Owls entered play four strokes behind Akron and turned in the low round of the day, posting a 4-over par 292 to finish the 54-hole event at 8-over par 872 and record an eight-shot victory over Winthrop (880). Louisville (883) was third and followed by Akron (884) and Indiana (885).
"That's our focus every single day. Our goal is to have the low round of the day," head coach Jay Moseley said. "We talked at dinner last night that if we play the way we're capable of playing, nobody is going to beat us out here. We didn't get off to a great start, but we hung in there and the course over 54 holes it is going to get separated out."
The victory marked the second of the year for Kennesaw State, which captured the Rees Jones Invitational in September. It also was the second straight year that Owls have won the Pinetree Intercollegiate as the won the inaugural event last season.
Kennesaw State received solid play throughout its lineup during the final round as freshman
Teremoana Beaucousin (Papara, Tahiti / Lycée de Papara) and junior
Jimmy Beck (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) posted even par scores of 72, while senior
Jonathan Klotz posted a 1-over par 73 and redshirt junior
Kelby Burton (Evans, Ga. / Lakeside HS) recorded a final-round 75.
Senior
Austin Vick (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS) tied for 26th with a 9-over 225 total, while sophomore
Carlos Segura Oliva, (Malaga, Spain / Colegio El Limonar ) who was playing as an individual for the Owls, tied for 18th at 7-over par 223.
Beck, the defending tournament champion finished fifth with an even-par total of 216, three shots behind Winthrop's Taylor Dickson who claimed individual medalist honors with a 3-under par score of 213.
Dickson finished two shots better than Louisville's Trevor Sluman, Akron's Ryan Harris and Winthrop's Zach Seabolt who tied for second at 1-under par 215.
The Pinetree Intercollegiate marked the end to Kennesaw State's fall schedule. The Owls open their spring schedule on Feb. 9 when they begin play at the Farms Collegiate Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
