Owls to Host Mercer in ESPN3 Featured Rivalry Face-off

THE GAME:
The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team will look to extend its home-court win streak over in-state rival Mercer in an ESPN3 featured game this Saturday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 p.m. ET in the KSU Convocation Center.

The Owls now sit at 4-10 on the year with a 0-2 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference after facing the top two teams in the league in Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson over the past two week.

Saturday’s game will also double as Korean Heritage Night with the first 150 fans in attendance receiving free KSU 30th anniversary t-shirts. General admission tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children with entry free as always for military members and KSU students with a valid ID.

THE COVERAGE
TELEVISION: ESPN3 will be broadcasting Saturday’s contest with Paul Crane and Dee Romine calling the game.
AUDIO: Play-by-play will be available from Kennesaw State with Ben Poplin narrating the action from courtside.
LIVE STATS: Statistical updates will be available from KSUOwls.com at the start of the game.

THE OPPONENT
The Bears of Mercer are aiming to snap a four-game losing skid and come in at 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the league standings.

Junior guard and Atlanta, Ga., native Sharnea Boykin leads the Mercer offense and is one of the top point guards in the A-Sun, holding a 1.8 assists/turnover ratio and is averaging 5.6 assists per game.

On the defensive end, 6-5 sophomore center Teanna Robinson leads the league in blocked shots with 22 total.

THE SERIES
The Owls have dominated the all-time series with the Bears, holding an 8-4 advantage overall and a 5-1 margin at the Convocation Center, including winning the last five at home.
 
During the last meeting, the Owls won in buzzer-beater fashion, 70-68, with Lisa Capellan (New York, N.Y./Osceola HS) drilling the game winner on Feb. 11, 2012.
 
Kristina Wells (Douglasville, Ga./Douglas County HS) was one of four players in double-figures scoring for the Owls as the sophomore flirted with the elusive triple-double, putting in 16 points while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out a career-high six assists.
 
LAST OUTING
Even with a 12-point lead midway through the second half, the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team couldn’t stave off the Hatters of Stetson as the Owls fell at home in an Atlantic Sun Conference matchup, 57-52.

Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) earned her seventh double-double of the year during the contest with 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead KSU.
 
Both Bria Young (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill HS) and Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) finished with nine points on three three-pointers while Wells had a nice game as well, chipping in with eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.
 
On the boards the Owls were much improved as well, outrebounding Stetson 44-41.
 
THE NUMBERS
The three-point defense of KSU is the best in the A-Sun, holding opponents to just a .259 success rate.
 
The Owls are committing just 11.6 fouls per game, putting KSU at No. 7 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per contest.
 
NEXT UP
The Owls will hit the road for a pair of A-Sun games from Jan. 12-14, heading down to Jacksonville, Fla., for matchups with North Florida and Jacksonville. KSU will be back at home on Jan. 19-21, when East Tennessee State and USC Upstate come to town.

NEWS AND NOTES
Gideon Retakes the Scoring Lead
Senior Gideon retook the scoring lead for the time being from teammate Wells after putting in 18 against Stetson. Gideon now has 157 total points, 11 better than Wells’ 146, and is continuing to average a double-double with 11.2 points per game and an A-Sun best 10.3 rebounds, the only player in the league to average double-digit rebounds.
 
Mason Named Newcomer of the Week
Freshman Chelsea Mason (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West HS) was named Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season after a 29 point two-game stretch. Mason also earned her first career double-double during the week with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Florida Gulf Coast.
 
Holliday’s Three-Point Shooting
Holliday is proving to be one of the top sharpshooters in the conference thus far, putting in a second-best 25 three-pointers this season. Holliday is now averaging just over two triples per game with 10.1 points per outing.
 
Wells Well-Rounded
Wells is putting together a solid stat line for the Owls in her sophomore season, averaging 10.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game with a .402 field goal percentage and is shooting .727 from the free-throw line.
