MARIETTA, Ga. – Southern Polytechnic State University women's basketball player Arnissa Galloway was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her play during the week of Jan. 21-27. It marks the first time Galloway has earned the weekly award.
Galloway, a 6-foot-1 junior center from Columbia, Miss., averaged 24.5 points and 11.5 rebounds as Southern Polytechnic went 2-0 with a pair of SSAC Eastern Division wins last week. The first-year transfer from Meridian Community College shot 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the field and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line. In Southern Poly's dramatic 70-69 victory on Saturday over Lee University, which is ranked sixth nationally in NAIA Division I, she recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and made the game-winning basket in the final seconds to end the Lady Flames' 14-game winning streak. In the Hornets' win against Southern Wesleyan University last Monday, Galloway scored a game-best 26 points and grabbed 10 boards.
On the season, Galloway has played in all 18 games with 17 starts for SPSU. She leads the squad in field goal percentage (46.1 percent) and offensive rebounds (67) while averaging 11.9 points and 8.7 boards per contest.
Within the SSAC, Galloway ranks fifth in offensive rebounds per game (3.7), eighth in total rebounds per game, 10th in defensive rebounds per game (4.9) and 10th in blocked shots per game (0.9). Nationally at the NAIA Division I level, she is 18th in offensive rebounds per game and 33rd in total rebounds per game.
Southern Poly, which received three points in the latest NAIA Division I poll to rank tied for No. 31 nationally, is 16-2 overall this season and in first place in the SSAC East at 9-2. The Hornets are on the road on Tuesday for an SSAC Eastern Division contest with the College of Coastal Georgia. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Brunswick, Ga.
