ROCKY FACE, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team is tied for 11
th place with reigning National Champions Texas after round one of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.
The team combined to post a 293, +5 on the 7,012 yards, par 72 course. Leading the Owls was senior Ben Greene (Duluth, Ga. / Peachtree Ridge HS). A four-year starter in the Black and Gold lineup, Greene opened the 54-hole event with a two-under-par, 70, to finish tied for eighth.
Fellow senior Peder Lunde Hermanson (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrine lundsgymnasiet) finished the first 18-holes with an even-par, 72. After playing the first 16 holes at two-under-par, a costly double-bogey on his 17th hole dropped Hermansson into a tie for 22nd.
Freshman Nicolai von Dellingshausen (Ratingen, Germany / Theodor Heuss Gymnasium) shot a 75, +3 in his first collegiate event, while junior Jonathan Klotz (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) rounded out the team score by shooting a 76, +4.
"I am really pleased with the way we played today for the most part," head coach Jay Moseley said. "We hit some great shots at times, but we also left a few shots out there. If we hit the ball well again tomorrow and have a few more putts drop, I am confident we can move up the leaderboard. Anything can happen on this couse, so if we improve each day, we can challenge the teams at the top."
With 36-holes remaining, the Owls have plenty of time to catch the leaders, as National Championship Runner-Up, Alabama is only nine-strokes ahead of the Owls in second place.
The University of Georgia stole the show on day one and carded a 278, -10, as T.J. Mitchell polished off a round of 65, -7 with six birdies on his final nine holes to hold the lead in the individual medalist race.
Kennesaw State will tee off in round two at 10:12 a.m. E.T. and will be paired with Texas and Clemson. Live stats of the Carpet Capital Collegiate can be viewed at Golfstat.com.
