Kennesaw State (4-5-1) owns a 5-2-2 mark in the all-time series versus the Bucs and is undefeated against the Spartans at 8-0-0. In 2011, the Owls posted a 1-1 double-overtime tie against ETSU and a 4-1 win over Upstate in the final regular season weekend of the season.
After going down a goal late in the match, redshirt-sophomore
Katrina Frost (Fayetteville, Ga./South Carolina) scored her fourth goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining to lift Kennesaw State to a 1-1 tie with Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams on Saturday night.
ETSU enters the match at 7-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action after earning a 3-1 over Stetson last Friday, before falling 2-1 to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. The seven wins for ETSU ranks in a tie for the most wins of an A-Sun women’s soccer team this season. Florida Gulf Coast has also registered seven wins so far in 2012.
Head Coach Adam Sayers is in his second season at ETSU. In his first season, Sayers led the Bucs to a 12-5-1 (7-1-1 A-Sun) record en route to the program’s first-ever share of the A-Sun regular season championship in 2011. Junior Ramsey Kerns, a three-time A-Sun Player of the Week in 2012, leads the ETSU offense with 27 points on 12 goals and three assists. Kerns’ 12 goals ranks second in the nation. Freshman Sarah Zadrazil has added three goals and seven assists for 13 points. After not seeing the field for the first five matches, freshman goalkeeper Kara Krajenta has started and played every minute for the Bucs in the previous five contests. She owns a 3-2-0 record with a 1.80 goals-against average on nine goals given up. The freshman has 18 saves to her name for a 66.7 save percentage.
USC Upstate (2-9-0, 0-2-0 A-Sun) opened conference action with losses against reigning conference champion Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson, each by a score of 2-0. The Spartans have posted wins over VMI and Presbyterian College, both of which were decided in double overtime.
Head Coach Abby Minihan is in her first season at Upstate. Prior to arriving in Spartanburg, she was an assistant coach for two years at Syracuse. Sophomore Michelle Calmeyn leads the Spartans with three points on a goal and an assist, while four other Spartans have registered points. Between the posts for Upstate is junior Sarah Plantz, who owns a 19-0 record and has given up 30 goals on the season for a 2.95 goals-against average. She has notched a league-leading 71 saves and ranks ninth in the country in total saves.
Kennesaw State next heads on the road for its first conference road trip of the season as the Owls travel to Northern Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. contest at Lipscomb.
