KENNESAW, Ga. – Redshirt freshman #Chelsea O’Callaghan# tallied two goals as the Kennesaw State women's soccer team handed Clayton State a 5-1 defeat in the Owls’ first and only exhibition match of the 2012 season.
The Owls established themselves early and often, scoring three times in the first half. Sophomore
Iyani Hughes (Chelsea, Ala./Chelsea) put KSU up 1-0 with a little less than four minutes gone in the match, dribbling through a Laker defender and slotting the ball past CSU goalkeeper Laoise O’Driscoll.
Seven minutes later O’Callaghan recorded her first goal of the match, as she received a pass from freshman
Hannah Churchill (Bristol, England/Filton College) and ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
Clayton State answered with a goal of its own in the 12th minute when Alicia Robinson took a pass from Saidhbh Collins and floated a shot over senior KSU goalkeeper
Lauren Roberts (Rome, Ga./Marshall) to close within 2-1.
That’s as close as the Lakers would get, as O’Callaghan notched her second goal of the game off of a pass from Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Player of the Year redshirt sophomore
Katrina Frost (Fayetteville, Ga./South Carolina) in the 26th minute.
Frost and freshman
Danielle Gray added goals in the second half to sail to the 5-1 victory.
Clayton State earned four corner kicks to Kennesaw State’s three, but was outshot 15-3 in the match, with nine Owl shots on frame. O’Callaghan led the charge with four shots and three on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Melissa Hutto (Pensacola, Fla./South Alabama) took over for Roberts in the second half and recorded one save.
Kennesaw State opens the 2012 season with its home opener Friday, Aug. 17 against Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at KSU Stadium.
