DELAND, Fla. – The Kennesaw State baseball team fell 12-4 in game one of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship to Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
In what was suppose to be a pitchers duel between the top-two pitchers in the A-Sun turned into a hitting barrage between the No. 3 seeded Owls and No. 4 seeded Eagles. The two teams combined for 23 hits and 16 runs in first round action of postseason play.
FGCU jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the first inning. After a lead off single by Kirby Retzer to open the game, clean-up hitter Brandon Bednar picked up the first RBI of the game on a single to centerfield. The Eagles would score their second run of the inning on a fielders choice to go up, 2-0.
KSU would answer back with one run in the third inning. Aaron Dobbs would reach on a two-out double and scored on a Peyton Hart single to make it 2-1.
After FGCU scored another run in the fifth inning to go up 3-1, the Owls responded with two in their half of the frame to knot up the score at three a piece. Jordan Craft started the rally with a walk to open the inning. Scoring on a Dobbs single that was booted by the Eagles second baseman, the Owls tied the score when Dobbs was plated on an Andy Almonte fielders choice.
The sixth inning would be the difference maker in the contest as the Eagles would knock starter Carr from the game en route to scoring six runs and jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Owls would walk three batters in the inning and commit a costly error that led to the rally.
Kennesaw would only muster one more run on the evening while the Eagles scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to take game one 12-3.
Despite only scoring four runs, the Owls tallied 11 hits, with Dobbs leading the way. Dobbs went three-for-five from the dish with one RBI and two runs scored, while Ronnie Freeman and Hart each collected two hits.
